About venue

The Church of St John the Baptist in Kurdějov is a beautiful Roman Catholic parish church built in the first half of the 14th century in the centre of Kurdějov, in the Břeclav district. It is one of the most important historic monuments in the Hustopeče region. The first written mention of the church dates from 1350; it acquired its present Late Gothic appearance at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. Around 1493, a massive freestanding bell tower was built to the west of the nave. Around 1507, the Chapel of All Saints was erected north of the church, which was then surrounded by a stone defensive wall with a walkway. At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, masonry underground escape passages were built. The complex consequently took on an almost fortress-like character, providing shelter and protection for villagers during frequent enemy raids.
