The State Opera is a home of the arts with a rich history. In the late 1880s, Prague's German-speaking community had a new theatre built in response to the recently opened Czech National Theatre and growing demands on theatrical operations, which the existing German stage—the Estates Theatre, then already a hundred years old—could no longer fully meet.
The Neo-Renaissance building, with its Neo-Rococo interior, was designed to plans by Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. Although it did not surpass the National Theatre in artistic expression, it gave Prague the most generous theatre space in terms of stage dimensions and auditorium capacity, and it has retained that distinction to this day.
