Events play out in a space representing a synthesis of a traditional teahouse, a bar, an opium den and a 1940s Shanghai music hall. The performers are all guests and waiting staff at this establishment; their props are all everyday objects, naturally integrated into the stage setting. The show’s acrobatic marvels thus take place in the course of events, with no intrusive announcements. Once seen, its uniqueness is unmistakable. With this setup, the Chinese National Circus is following a trend it itself has set, of not simply presenting a series of acts, but of incorporating these acts into a greater whole which offers a fascinating insight into a strange culture and, through the events and sights it depicts, is also deeply moving. Thus Chinese acrobatics comes full circle back to its origins in the Chinese teahouse. SHANGHAI NIGHTS goes BACK TO THE ROOTS of Chinese acrobatics to overcome new show business challenges.
