How to Hear Sound in Film

Ashot Mansuryan, a graduate of FAMO in Písek, wants to change the way you hear sound in movies. Because hearing is easy, but understanding is where the magic happens.

We'll dig into the basics of film sound, and the different kinds of information it can provide to the viewer, often without them even realizing it.

Along the way, we'll walk through practical examples and see how even small changes in sound placement, its color and pacing, among many other things, can have a massive impact on the entire scene.

The intent of this course is to provide you with a framework that will simplify and categorize the dramaturgic functions of sound, so you can start making decisions with more ease and greater intent, and become a more creative, authentic filmmaker.

This course is for everyone: beginners taking their first steps into the craft, those interested in working in film sound who want to deepen their understanding of the field, but especially for directors, who often know exactly what they want a scene to feel like, yet struggle to put that feeling into words when it comes to sound.
